Nociceptive pain which is caused by stimulation of sensory nerve fibers. It’s induced by damage caused by thermal, mechanical , and chemical stimuli. Nociceptive pain can be pain from a burn, inflammation, or deep diffused dull pain within the body. Neuropathic pain which is caused by damage or disease to the nervous system. Neuropathic pain is often described as “burning”, “tingling”, “electrical”, “stabbing”, or “pins and needles”.

Compounded pain creams can be tailor made based on the type of pain a patient may be experiencing. There are many types of active ingredients that can be used topically that relieve pain and are not available commercially in a topical form. We can custom make a pain-relieving cream for both Nociceptive and Nociceptive pain.

With Nociceptive pain have many options for relief.

  • Ketoprofen works by inhibiting an enzyme that is triggered when the body detects physical trauma to a specific area.
  • Baclofen 2%, works by activating a specific neurotransmitter that reduces nerve impulses to the specific area where it is being applied.
  • Lidocaine 5% is anesthetic numbing agent.
  • Cyclobenzaprine 2% works by relaxing muscles that may have been strained and may also have an effect to calm nerves that innervate tissues that have been damaged.

Neuropathic pain
Shingles, Neuralgia, & Diabetic Neuropathy

Neuropathic pain can be debilitating, but the following medications have been shown to provide some relief.

  • Ketamine 10%, Cyclobenzaprine 2%, and Lidocaine 5% work by blocking receptors on nerves that would otherwise be stimulated when the tissues around the nerves are damaged.
  • Gabapentin 5% inhibits the nerve cells from releasing a specific neurotransmitter that would cause pain.
  • Amitriptyline 5% prevents nerve cell firing at the point of tissue injury or damage.
